Kai Sotto returns fully healthy as Gilas Pilipinas looks to revive FIBA World Cup campaign

MANILA, Philippines — Kai Sotto is back with Gilas Pilipinas at a crucial point in the Philippines' FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers campaign, and the 7-foot-3 center says he is ready and motivated to help the national team rediscover its winning form.

Sotto confirmed on Monday that his return came at a favorable time. After dealing with injuries that kept him away from the national team for nearly two years, he is now healthy and available for Gilas' fourth-window assignments against Jordan and Iran.

"The timing is great because I'm now healthy," Sotto said during a press conference at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, explaining that injuries had prevented him from joining previous Gilas campaigns.

Sotto returns when Gilas needs him most

The Philippines enters the second round of the qualifiers with little room for error. Gilas Pilipinas is 2-4 after the opening round and faces Jordan and Iran, both of whom carry 5-1 records, in two critical home games on August 28 and 30.

FIBA has described the upcoming window as a must-win stretch for the Philippines, which advanced to the second round after finishing behind Australia and New Zealand in Group A. The team is now in Group E alongside Iran, Jordan and Syria.

Sotto's return therefore provides more than a boost in size. His presence gives head coach Tim Cone another proven interior option as Gilas tries to improve its rebounding, rim protection and offensive balance against two strong West Asian teams.

A long-awaited Gilas comeback

Sotto's last appearance for the national team came in November 2024 during the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers. He delivered one of his best performances in a Gilas uniform in that window, posting 19 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in the Philippines' historic 93-89 victory over New Zealand.

He was subsequently sidelined after suffering a torn ACL while playing in Japan in January 2025. Although he eventually returned to action, his recovery kept him out of several Gilas windows, including the team's earlier World Cup qualifying assignments.

FIBA statistics show just how valuable Sotto has been internationally. In the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers, he averaged 15.5 points, 12.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists across four games.

His latest return also comes after he completed his season in Japan and had more flexibility in his schedule. Sotto said conversations with Cone, team management and his fellow players helped convince him that the timing was right to return to the national team.

Sotto and AJ Edu reunite

Another major storyline is the reunion of Sotto and AJ Edu in Gilas' frontcourt. The two big men have not played together for the senior national team since the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, which was co-hosted by the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.

Both players have had to overcome injury setbacks, making their reunion particularly significant for Cone's plans. Their combination gives Gilas additional length and defensive versatility while also allowing the coaching staff to deploy different frontcourt combinations.

Veteran center June Mar Fajardo is also part of the group, while players such as Kevin Quiambao and Carl Tamayo are expected to take on greater responsibility in the absence of naturalized player Justin Brownlee.

Brownlee's absence puts more pressure on Gilas' big men

Cone confirmed Monday that Brownlee is unlikely to play in the upcoming window because the naturalized player does not believe he is healthy enough to contribute. Brownlee has been dealing with injuries and has remained in the United States during Gilas' preparations.

His absence makes Sotto's return even more important. Instead of relying on its usual naturalized centerpiece, the Philippines is expected to enter the two games with an all-Filipino lineup, increasing the responsibility on Sotto, Edu, Fajardo and the team's younger forwards.

Cone has previously called Sotto a "game-changer" for Gilas, and the coach's plans now have an opportunity to take shape with the towering center back in the rotation.

Gilas looking to regain its rhythm

Sotto has already seen action for Gilas during a recent tune-up victory over Korean Basketball League club Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus, giving the coaching staff an early look at his conditioning and chemistry with the current group.

The exhibition also gave Sotto and his teammates valuable preparation before the much more consequential FIBA games later this week.

For Sotto, however, the comeback is about more than simply returning to the court. He said he is highly motivated to help Gilas secure victories for the Philippines, with the upcoming games carrying significant weight in the country's World Cup qualification hopes.

He also has an additional personal source of motivation, revealing that the arrival of his first child has inspired him to approach the national-team assignment with even greater seriousness.

With Jordan and Iran waiting at the Mall of Asia Arena, Gilas Pilipinas will need the healthiest and most focused version of Sotto. After almost two years away, the big man finally has the opportunity to help the Philippines rediscover the form that once made the national team one of Asia's most dangerous sides.
